Is it possible to make your own music ringtones from a CD?

Right let me explain alittle better, i want to put a specific song as a ringtone on my phone can i burn the track onto my PC and edit the part i want turn it to a MP3 and download to phone....is there a software freeware program you can get to do this...or is it straight forward to do, if so how..thanks...
